Young Adult Authors, Corrie Wang "The Takedown" and Joanne O’Sullivan - "Between Two Skies"

We’re excited to host another Read Up All Year event with Charleston writer Corrie Wang and Asheville writer Joanne O’Sullivan. Both women are celebrating their debut novels this year: Corrie Wang’s The Takedown and Joanne O’Sullivan’s Between Two Skies.  We’ll have the opportunity to hear the story behind the story of both books, as well as ask questions about process and inspiration, and what it’s like to publish for the first time.
The Takedown:
A week before college applications are due, an alarmingly realistic and ruinous video of Kyla is uploaded to her school’s website. It instantly goes viral, and only Kyla knows that’s it’s a fake. With time running out, Kyla delves into a world of hackers, haters and creepy stalkers in an attempt to do the impossible--take something off the internet--all while dealing with the fallout from her own karmic footprint. Set in near-future Brooklyn, The Takedown is a stylish, propulsive, and feminist-style whodunit, asking who would you rely on if your tech turned against you?
Corrie Wang is passionate about libraries, road trips, and eating all the food, everywhere. She grew up in Buffalo but spent her formative years in Brooklyn, where one of her last paying gigs was managing a three-story nightclub on the Lower East Side. he currently lives in Charleston, where she and her husband Shuai Wang own and operate Short Grain food truck.
Between Two Skies
Hurricane Katrina sets a teenage girl in a small Louisianna fishing village adrift. But a new life — and the promise of love — emerges from the wreckage. Told in a strong, steady voice, with a keen sense of place and a vivid cast of characters, here is a novel that asks compelling questions about class and politics, exile and belonging, and the pain of being cast out of your home. But above all, this remarkable debut tells a gently woven love story, difficult to put down, impossible to forget.
Joanne O’Sullivan is a journalist for the Asheville Citizen-Times. She lived in New Orleans for several years and returns to southern Louisiana frequently. Between Two Skies is her debut novel. She lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband and children.
