Eve of the Eve of Halloween - Seance, Cocktail Party, and Writing Contest

  • 130 S. Main Street Greenville, SC 29601 USA (map)

“Ghosts, like ladies, never speak ‘til spoke to.” —Richard Harris Barham

Late at night, when the only light coming through the windows of the café is from the Poinsett Hotel, we’ve heard some things. Bumps and rattles. Sighs that aren’t signing from the usual places. And we’ve been thinking about how old this building is, how long it’s been a part of Greenville’s downtown, and how much it’s seen...
So in honor of the season, we’re hosting our first story contest. Submit your version of "The Ghost That Haunts M. Judson," in 1000 words or less— the spookier, the scarier, the more it freaks us out, the better. We’ll read the entries aloud on Thursday, October 29, as part of our first Halloween extravaganza. The café will be offering $2 Black Velvets, as well as some other tricks and treats of the season. (Costumes encouraged, brave children welcome, but the evening will be uncensored.)
The best ghost story, as declared by secret ballot of the crowd, will receive a $50 gift card to the store. Please email entries to
