Join us for an In Conversation with Barb Blair and Angie Thompson as they discuss Barb's second book Furniture Makes the Room. "Angie Thompson is a dear friend and former shop manager at Knack. Our friendship was instant, and the bond that we have, and the ability to really see into each others souls is something that I treasure and hold dear. Angie truly gets the passion that I have for Knack, and understands the vision, work, and thought that goes into everything we do at Knack."
Barb Blair, founder of Knack, became hooked on the transformative power of paint when she redid her kitchen cabinets in 2000. After years of experimenting and learning from trial and error, she opened her first full-time furniture makeover shop in 2007. She has since written a best selling book, Furniture Makeovers, published by Chronicle Books, and is working on a second book, Furniture Makes the Room, which is due out in the Spring of 2016. Barb has helmed the journey of Knack from selling only her furniture makeovers to offering an entire collection of gifts, housewares, decor and other finds. She chooses each item with intentionality to ensure that it offers both aesthetic and functional value.
Knack can trace its beginnings to furniture makeovers: spotting a piece and being able to see beyond the dust and grime into its heart. Then, with careful prep work, thoughtful design and a myriad of original features like unique knobs and paper-lined drawers, the furniture emerges more beautiful than it ever was. This attention to detail has blossomed into an entire shop filled with functional yet beautiful finds and gifts, from kitchen wares like napkins and cutting boards to personal effects such as locally made zip pouches and handkerchiefs.
