Join us as we welcome to our cafe USC professor and historian David Shields, who has spent over a decade researching early American agricultural and cooking practices. Dr. Shields is at the center of a movement of farmers and chefs working to recover the rich flavor and diversity of southern food and will be here to share his infinite wisdom on the subject. 

Dr. Shields will read portions of his book Southern Provisions: The Creation and Revival of a Cuisine, and discuss America's quintessential cuisine. From Carolina Gold rice to white flint corn, the ingredients of authentic southern cooking are returning to fields and dinner plates, and with Shields as our guide, we can satisfy our hunger both for the most flavorful regional dishes and their history.
